What might apply to you
- IRA: A $7,500 traditional IRA contribution is fully deductible at your income, even with a plan at work. The same $7,500 in a Roth IRA is not deductible but comes out tax-free later.
- 0% capital gains: Long-term gains are taxed at 0% federally while taxable income stays under $98,900 (married filing jointly). On these numbers, about $56,100 of gains would fit.
- Roth conversion: You are in the 12% bracket with about $58,000 of room before the 22% bracket starts at $100,800 of taxable income. A Roth conversion of up to that amount is taxed at no more than 12%.
- HSA: With a high-deductible health plan you can contribute $4,400 (self-only) or $8,750 (family). The family amount saves about $1,050 at your 12% rate. Withdrawals for medical costs are tax-free.
